on youth voice

Despite the fear of young people (teens in particular, urban teens in specific) that is prevalent in our society, there are young folks who have found the source of their power, and speak it loudly.   We are blessed to have some of these folks in our United Playaz family.  Read the following blog post, by DeVante Lewis, a UP Mentor at United Playaz of New York, about the research project he did with three other young researchers. These amazing folks took the notebooks out of the hands of those in power and conducted research about topics that they were personally familiar with, in order to find out:  what do youth experience within the juvenile justice system?  What reforms do youth and their families want to the system, so that it would work on the balance of true justice?

Once you have completed reading the blog post, respond in a comment below to the following questions.  Please write your name in your response so you can get credit for your work!

1. What is one statistic that really stood out to you?  Why?
2.  Do you agree with DeVante's claim that the juvenile justice system fails our youth?  Why/not?
3.  Adults often say that "youth don't care".  Do you think youth want to have a voice at court and in policy decisions around juvenile justice?
4. Why do you think that youth aren't involved in decisions about your lives?  Where is one place you'd like to have more voice in your life?

  1. 1. Only 42% of youth had their parents immediately notified after arrest so saying some parents really don't care
2.yes he said that we should rescheduling to not miss school days
3 i think if we unite but we are in a very low postilion so people might not care as much

  2. 1)The statistic that stood out to me was only 42% of youth had their parents immediately notified after arrest. This is important because many kids that dont have their parents by their side will be scared and admit to something that isn't true and will be charged for something higher.

2)I do agree that the Juvenile Justice system fails the youth because instead of trying to help them they are a going against them and not helping them

    3) The youth do care but they are judge because of the many people that dont agree with them

4)The youth arent involved because they do not get the chance to be involved they will be accused of a crime and they will not be able to speak because of something like that

  3. 1. Only 28% of youth had their parents present when questioned by the police. I say this because this is an illegal act and it still happens. This is an unconstitutional act as well.
    2. Of course I agree with DeVante's claim. Once you get arrested, you have a very slight chance of finding a job to support your family. Once you have been incarcerated, the system sets you up to go back. Only because it is a company and it gets money for those you are there and more they bring in.
    3. Honestly as a youth myself I want to change society and prove wrong to those statistics that are against young Hispanic/ Latino and black men like myself. So wanted to make a difference and caring is something that I do. I'm pretty sure (more than 1000%) that they are others like myself.
    4. Young minds do not get the be involved in decisions because the adults think that their minds are not yet developed. Now society has only made that true. It has limited what the youth can and cannot do. The adults think that there is not enough maturity and experience to make decisions.

  4. 1.One statistic that really stood out to me was ''74% of youth coming back to the community from residential placement said they had no support in their transition home'' because society makes it seem that delinquents aren't human or are like really harmful to every single person in a community and I don't agree with that because a mistake is a mistake(until it's really repeated more than once or twice or a couple of times) and nobody's perfect so sometimes we have to help each other become better people just like the saying goes ''to each his own''.
3.First of all, I don't agree with the phrase''youth don't care'' because sometimes some adults just take some stuff too far and sometimes the youth get fed up when they keep hearing the same thing they don't wanna hear over and over and the youth do want to have a voice at court but they're scared or think they'll never be heard so they just keep things to themselves.
2.I agree with DeVante because once a kid gets a criminal record a minor offence, it's like they're life is over cause they can't find good paying jobs and even federal jobs they always wanted to do.
4.Even when youths have bright and good ideas than most well-minded adults, they're always shunned and ignored because of the foolish mistakes of someone immature.

2)Yes i agree because the juvenile system aren't doing anything for our youth
    3) The youth do care, the adults just dont pay mind, because "we're just kids"
4)The Youth dont get involved because adults think we dont know anything or care about anything but us,everywhere i want more voice everywhere

  7. 1) I thought it was crazy how 72% of youth who leave prison never get support after
    2) I believe that juvenile systems do more then fail or youth but break them down even more
3)I think the youth more the anybody often want to voice out how they feel about law because they are the ones mainly getting arrested and what not and adults assuming that they don't is very ignorant
    4) Immature youth make the youth that are mentally on another level look like kids who make irrational decisions when not every young teen is irrational

2.Yes when a teen gets arrested for something it goes on their record and it's gonna be difficult for them to get a job.
3.yes youth do care and we have a voice but we get put down or get ignored.
4.Adults think we immature so that's why they don't want youth to get involved and we have great ideas.

  9. 1. Only 28% of youth had their parents present when questioned by the police. I think this stood out to me the most is because it shows that there are way too much parents/family's that don't care about there son, daughter, mom, dad if they die or go to jail or not.

    2. The Juvenile system is not doing the right thing. Instead of putting them in jail teach them to not do wrong and talk to them daily to give most kids attention and show that people actually care.

    3. Everyone wants to have a voice, even when they need to defend themselves.

    4. People don't include or listen to what young kids say these days because they think that we aren't experienced or we aren't smart, it's our lives not there's, if we know something is right or wrong and we still do it then we did it for a reason, not because we don't have a clue of whats happening.

  10. 1. Only 42% of parents were notified of their kids being in jail. This stood out to me because its law that every person under the age of 18 who is locked up parents should be notified.
